Where are We ?

 

STUDENT PILOT CERTIFICATE

On your initial trial flight training you will be issued a Temporary RA-Aus Membership, after 3 hours of dual instruction you must have completed and submitted an application form for membership and a Student Pilot Certificate will be issued by Recreational Aviation Australia.

REQUIREMENTS

1. Your health must be of a standard equivalent to that required for the issue of a Private Motor Vehicle Drivers Licence in Australia (or deemed fit enough by a doctor) and if under the age of 18 years has written consent from your parent or guardian to undertake flight training, including an understanding of the risks of flight training.

2. Must satisfy the RA-Aus examiner that you are able to:

  • understand and carry out instructions given in the English language
  • be deemed competent at basic handling of controls
  • demonstrate the level of maturity required for training
  • understand(s) the full requirements of training including theory
  • understand the risks and hazards of flight.

PRIVILEGES

Under the supervision of a RA-Aus certified instructor who is responsible to and under the supervision of an approved RA-Aus CFI, as Pilot-In-Command of a recreational aircraft that is not carrying a passenger, with the exception of the instructor, for the purpose of increasing your flying skills in order to qualify for the issue of a Pilot Certificate.

RECREATIONAL PILOT CERTIFICATE

REQUIREMENTS

1. Prior to making application for a Recreational Pilot Certificate you must:

  • hold a valid Student Pilot Certificate
  • sign a declaration to the effect that your health standard is equivalent to that required for the issue of a private motor vehicle driver's licence in Australia
  • have undergone flight and ground training in accordance with the Operations Manual and relevant CAOs or a recognised course acceptable to the Operations Manager
  • in the case of a person holding a Private Pilot or higher licence or a GFA Glider Rating, meet the requirements of Section 2.12 of the Operations Manual
  • have successfully passed theory and in-flight examinations in accordance with the requirements of the Operations Manual and relevant CAOs, thus demonstrating to a CFI that you have reached the level of competency required for the issue of a Pilot Certificate and
  • completed either a recognised human factors course or completed home study, so as to be able to pass the human factors theory test.

2. AERONAUTICAL EXPERIENCE - Prior to undertaking a flight test for the issue of a Pilot Certificate you shall have completed a minimum of 20 hours flying experience in an recreational / light sport aeroplane which shall include a minimum of 5 hours as pilot in command (solo), or

if having previous flying experience in sailplanes or aeroplanes other than recreational / light sport aeroplanes:

have in excess of 20 hours flying experience with a minimum of five hours pilot in command (solo),

undertake such a dual training in a two place recreational / light sport aeroplane as deemed necessary by a CFI; and

acquire a minimum of 5 hours flying experience flying a recreational / light sport aircraft which must include at least one hour solo; or

if holding a current PPL or higher licence, have completed such dual training as is deemed necessary by a CFI or shall have not less than 5 hours flying experience in an recreational / light sport aircraft which must include a minimum of one hour solo.

PRIVILEGES

A valid pilot certificate authorises the holder to act as pilot in command of a recreational / light sport aeroplane, of an aircraft type for which they hold a group endorsement (Section 2.05 refers). A pilot certificate holder may not fly as pilot in command of a recreational / light sport aeroplane:

1. When a recreational / light sport aeroplane is flown a distance greater than 25 nautical miles from the point of take-off unless you:

  • hold a valid RA-Aus cross country endorsement; or
  • are conducting flight training solo exercises under the direct supervision and control of a CFI.

2. At or within 8 kilometres of a licensed aerodrome unless you:

  • have passed a RA-Aus Flight Rules and Procedures examination or a RA-Aus recognised equivalent examination.

RADIO OPERATOR ENDORSEMENT

REQUIREMENTS

Student Pilots undergoing training for the issue of a RA-Aus Radio Operator endorsement may use aeronautical frequency VHF radio equipment providing they operate the radio equipment under the supervision and control of an instructor who holds a RA-Aus Radio Operator endorsement

PRIVILEGES

A RA-Aus Radio Operator endorsement permits the holder to operate approved aeronautical frequency VHF radio equipment installed in or used in conjunction with a recreational / light sport aircraft.

The holder of a RA-Aus Radio Operator endorsement is at all times subject to the requirements of Civil Aviation Regulations, Civil Aviation Orders and Aeronautical Information Publications

Passenger endorsement

REQUIREMENTS

  • Be the holder of a valid RA-Aus Pilot Certificate.
  • Have accrued a minimum of 10 hours flight time as pilot in command of an aircraft.
  • Have a minimum of 2 hours flight time as pilot in command of an approved two seat recreational / light sport; and
  • Pass a flight test with a RA-Aus Examiner

PASSENGER CARRIAGE LIMITATIONS

No Pilot Certificate holder shall carry passengers in a recreational / light sport aeroplane unless:

  • they have a minimum of 5 hours experience as pilot in command on an aircraft of the same group (Section 2.04) as the aircraft which will be used for the carriage of passengers; and
  • during the last 90 days they have carried out at least 3 take-offs and 3 landings while flying as pilot in command, or while flying as pilot under the supervision of an RA-Aus instructor, of an aircraft of a similar type as that to be used for the carriage of passengers; and
  • they are medically fit and have signed a medical declaration that they meet a medical standard equivalent to that required for the issue of a private motor vehicle licence in Australia

Navigation / Cross Country endorsement

REQUIREMENTS

  • Have completed aminimumof 10 hours dual cross country navigation flight training and accumulated a minimum of 2 hours solo cross country navigation experience; and
  • Reach the standard required as specified in Section 3.04, Syllabus of recreational / light sport Flight Training (18. Flight Planning and 19. Navigation); and
  • Pass a RA-Aus Flight Rules and Procedures written examination or an equivalent exam recognized by the RA-Aus; and

Pass a navigation flight test in a two seat recreational / light sport aircraft with a Pilot Examiner or a CFI. Pilots holding a Private Pilot Licence, or higher licence, or other equivalent pilot qualifications recognized by the RA-Aus are deemed to meet this requirement.

CLOTHING

Students are required to wear appropriate clothing smart casual is recommended. The best clothing for flying is natural fibre (wool, cotton), long sleeve shirt and hat. Synthetic materials and blends are not recommended. Shorts, high heel shoes, thongs or bulky boots are not suitable.
